Shopping at our store, a letter to parents

Posted by Lindsay Stephenson on

As a parent, I know that not every environment is easy or accessible for all children. Sometimes it’s loud music and flashing lights. Other times, it’s something as simple as a set of stairs that makes a place out of reach.

I became acutely aware of this at my own store when a parent recently shared with my team that her daughter, who uses a wheelchair, kept hearing about Charlie Pickles at school. While her friends were able to run over at lunch and come back with stickers and treats, she couldn’t join them.

That conversation stayed with me. Because while the steps outside our shop are part of the building’s design, what matters most is that no child should feel left out of an experience their peers get to enjoy.

As a mom, I also know the weight of having to be strong for our kids and constantly advocating for environments that include them. It can feel overwhelming, exhausting, and, at times, lonely. Reaching out to us should never feel that way—because we get it. We’re parents, too. I live with social anxiety myself, and I know many children working through it as well.  (Side note - I also have ADHD which I wear proudly on my sleeve, so if kids ever need to talk about that, I've got you)

So, I want to say this: if there’s something I, or my team can do to make your child’s visit possible, comfortable, and joyful, please let me know. Reach out to us at anytime at hi@charliepickles.com or, come into the store to talk to us.

Here are just a few ways we can help:

  • Mobility: Our shop does have steps, but if you give us a heads-up, we’ll find a way to make your visit work.

  • Anxiety: If your child feels nervous in social situations, we can create a calmer, low-pressure shopping experience.

  • Learning Experiences: If your child is practicing shopping skills, we can arrange a private one-on-one visit to help them build confidence.

At Charlie Pickles, my goal is simple: every child should feel welcome here. Please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’d love to work with you to make that happen.
